Cuttings in a “propagation box” for beginners

many houseplants are originally from a tropical climate and also do better if they are at home in a similar environment. This often means high humidity and sufficient (sun) light. Cuttings in a propagation box has the advantage that there is always a high humid environment for the new ones cuttings† This gives them an optimal environment for rooting.

What do you need:

  1. a stek
  2. sphagnum moss
  3. hydro granules

Step 1: a cutting

Soak the sphagnum moss. For a good explanation of how to cut off a cutting in the right way and how to soak the sphagnum moss, there is here the blog post “Step-by-step plan: cuttings on sphagnum moss for beginners”. Place a thin layer of hydro granules in the jar. The hydro granules absorb moisture, this ensures that good moisture can also be released to the sphagnum moss and that excess water is absorbed by the hydro granules. The roots of the cutting will then not stand in the water, which limits the risk of root rot.

Step 2: sphagnum moss

Place a thin layer of sphagnum moss on top of the hydro grains. Then take the cutting that you can dip in cutting powder. Surround this with moss and put it firmly in the pot. Give the jar a thin layer of water so that the hydro granules are slightly submerged.

Step 3: hydro granules

In your propagation box we will create the nice environment for the cuttings. Place a thin layer of hydro granules in the container with a thin layer of sphagnum moss on top. Pour a thin layer of water into the box. Now you put the cuttings in the box. You can also skip steps 1 and 2 and place the cuttings directly on the moss. The advantage is that many cuttings fit in, the disadvantage is that it is sometimes difficult to remove the cuttings individually because the roots are completely buried.

Step 4: Jar / Cup

Close the box and put it in a bright place. If you put the box in direct sunlight, there is a chance that the leaves will burn because of the water droplets that come on the leaves. Due to the heat in the house, you will see that the box quickly fills with condensation. If you air the box every day, this prevents mold from forming. I personally check my plants every day and give them a quick breather.

Good luck with cuttings!
