Step-by-step plan: cuttings on water for beginners

Plants cuttings† It sounds so easy, and it is if you follow the right steps and have the right supplies. In this article we explain step by step how you can do this best. What do you need? Glass or vase with water, – Pruning shears or knife and disinfectant.

Step 1: Disinfect the blade or pruning shears

Removing part of the plant creates a wound on your plant and your cutting, as it were. When you disinfect your pruning shears or knife before use, the chance that bacteria will get into the wound is much less and there is less chance of rot and other misery.

As an example for cuttings on water we use the Monstera (albo) borsigiana.

Step 2: Cut or cut about 2 centimeter below an aerial root

Look at the photo below what an aerial root looks like. But beware: make sure that in addition to an aerial root (or nodule) there is also at least 1 leaf on the cutting.

In some cases there are two leaves close together or you have multiple aerial roots. That's no problem, you simply have a bigger spot! If the aerial roots of your cutting are very long, you can cut them to about 5 centimeters.

The cutting formula for this plant is: leaf + stem + aerial root = cutting!

Step 3: Now take your vase with water and put your cutting in it

Make sure that the aerial root (or nodule) is submerged, but do not submerge too much of the plant.

Optional: before you put the cutting in water, you can dip the cut end in cutting powder to stimulate root growth! If you want to know more about cutting powder, look in the webshop under the category 'plant food', Pokon cutting powder can be found here.

Step 4: Patience is a virtue!

You will also have to be patient when you use cutting powder. Change the water as soon as it looks cloudy or when you see that the aerial root or nodule is no longer submerged.

Step 5: As soon as your roots are at least 5 centimeters

As soon as your roots are at least 5 centimeters you can transfer them to an airy potting soil mix! Each plant has its own favorite potting soil mix, so don't just put your young plant in the potting soil!
