Alocasia is a plant genus of tuberous plants with large, long-stalked leaves. The plants are distinctive for their leaf shape, which can resemble an elephant's ear or arrowhead, as well as the decorative markings of the leaves.

The genus Alocasia includes 79 different species, all of which are native to tropical or subtropical regions of Asia and Eastern Australia, where they grow naturally in areas with rainforests or similar climates.

Alocasia made its way into Dutch living rooms in the 50s, but today it has had a renaissance and has become a popular plant in modern homes. Although the Alocasia plants are relatively large, their long stems give them an airy and simple appearance.

The different varieties are decorative in their own way; some with zebra-striped stems, some others with fringed leaf margin and some thirds with white leaf markings. Especially since the plants have regained their popularity.

Care of Alocasia
Alocasia is native to tropical regions, so it's not surprising that they prefer warm and moist air. It can be difficult to reach here in the Netherlands, but the plant still thrives in a normal indoor climate.

Although the plant likes a light spot, it should not be exposed to direct sunlight, as it can stick into the leaves. Therefore, place it in a place where there is a lot of indirect light and where the temperature is between 18 – 22 ° C.
Alocasia does not like the cold, so watch out for drafts through windows and doors. The plant's leaves face the light, so turning your Alocasia at regular intervals is an advantage to keep the plant from growing crooked.

Some Alocasia plants fold their leaves together in winter. This is not necessarily because the plant is dead, but often because the plant goes into hibernation. Here you should water sparingly during the winter so that the plant does not dry out completely, and water more often when the plant shoots again.

Irrigation and fertilizer
Alocasia should be watered regularly with room temperature water so that the soil never dries out completely. It can be beneficial to spray the plant from time to time – with a nebulizer or in the shower.

If you water the Alocasia too much, it can start to drip from the leaf tips. This is called guttation and disappears when you reduce the amount of water you give the plant.

Alocasia benefits from the addition of liquid fertilizers associated with irrigation throughout the growing season. You can always see the recommended dosage ratio on the fertilizer product.
